Q&A: I found out my engagement ring is fake.?
Question by Aurora: I found out my engagement ring is fake.?
My boyfriend proposed to me last year, and he told me my ring came from a prominent diamond distributer, and that it was a 1/2 karat diamond. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very pretty ring. But I was somewhat suspicious from the beginning, because it looked different than other diamonds I’ve seen. It looked a lot like moissanite, which holds its own next to a real diamond. He bought the cut and color gold I liked, but he lied (and is still lying) about the stone. I want to confront him about this, because I believe we need total honesty in a relationship. I’m not necessarily mad about the moissanite, I just wish he would have told me the truth to begin with. He was working two jobs at the time he bought it, so I figured he had enough to pay for it. I don’t doubt that he loves me, it just bothers me that he would lie about something so trivial. What should I do?
It came in a box that was different from the place he said he got it. I asked him where the jeweler was located, because I had never heard of them before. He said that the box from the real place got damaged in shipping, and that he just used that box from his mom. I checked out the jewelery company online and I found my exact ring. It was moissanite. It bothers me more that he lied, and keeps lying about taking it to the diamond jewelry store to get it sized down from a 6.5 to a 6.
Thanks for all of your advice! It’s just difficult to understand why the person I have dating for over 3 & 1/2 years would lie to me about this. He knows it’s like my “dream” to get married and raise a family, and this is why it bothers me so much.
