I’m recently engaged, and trying to pick out a ring is almost driving me nuts. I’m not really a fan of regular diamonds, plus the cost of them isn’t something i want to put my fiance through, since we just bought a house. ive noticed moissanite, diamonart, and other synthetic gems on the market. How do they compare to a real diamond, as in hardness, and longevity of wear? I want something that will last like a diamond, but possibly get in other colors, or with another gem.

my co worker got a massionite and i personally dont like it. you can tell it is not a diamond-if your low on money you can get one and the cost will go towards a new diamond in the future usually..but i say get what YOU want–you will have it forever and you will show it to every one. that is one thing to splurge on!

What is the word used for a man made diamond? I’m not talking about Cubic Zirconiums (CZ’s), and i’m not too sure what Moissanite is.

I am looking for a cheaper alternative for a wedding ring. I want a real diamond. Not a CZ or anything fake. But i have heard that there are man made diamonds that are real… meaning they have the same structure and are made of the same thing as natural diamonds…. and they’re supposidly cheaper.

Also what is the difference between the man made Diamonds and natural Diamonds? Quality?

And what should i look out for when buying a real man made diamond, making sure that i get exactly that and not a CZ or sapphire or something like that?

Also, with a man made diamond does it show that it is real when the jewlers use those little hand held diamond detector things? Sorry, I’m not sure what they are called. But I’m sure someone knows what I’m talking about. [ I think that they determine whether or not the stone conducts heat when the tip of the hand held doo-dad is applied , and if it shows that the stone does conduct heat then it is determined to be a diamond. Correct me if I'm wrong.]

I would really appreciate it if someone could answer all of my questions, i have a lot of them and i just wanna do some research before i go out and buy a man made diamond only to find out its not what i want. Thank you so much!

Natural Diamonds v.s. Man Made Diamonds?

You go girl. Some people I know put a down-payment on a house and got a cheap ring, just something to think about. Whick one looks the most like a real diamond. It seem like where ever i go they just bash on each other and say that they have the superior product. I want to be surprised, but I gave my soon-to-be fiance specifications on diamond quality and size ( I wanted to make sure he wouldn’t get extravagant )
But going through the prices of even the flawed, slightly colored, half carat diamonds, I thought it was a bit much. Especially knowing that I didn’t really want to wear my engagement ring all my life, just through my engagement. (I’ll wear just my band after we get married because I work with my hands a lot)

Also, we’re college students.
So I thought it would be a good idea for him to get the setting he wants to surprise me with, but instead of putting diamonds in it, he should put moissanite (sp?) stones in it, and then later after we’ve worked for a bit and have money to spend, then we could pop out the moissanite or cubic zirconia and get real diamonds

Is that reasonable? Or weird? Has anyone else done this?
wow, acedelux, I guess you just didn’t read what I typed. I’m obviously not materialistic if I want a cubic zirconium engagement ring! lol

He’s the one who wants to get me diamond because I’ve never had anything before, and he wants to give me something special. I’M the one who’s telling him not too.

also, it won’t be his money or my money after we’re married, it will be our money. We’ll have a joint account. Funny you should say something like that, considering I’ll be making a ton more than he will lol

i told my boyfriend not to go overboard with my engagement ring to. he is purposing this thusday (he told my mom and she told me and showed me pictures of the ring) so i went to the jewerly store and found out my engagement ring was close to a thousand dollars. your ideas are good but don’t be surprised if he doesn’t listen to them lol

I’m an old-fashioned gal, and I’d always opt for a diamond engagement ring. For me, the second best would be an aquamarine because it is his birthstone.

My boyfriend and I have been together for about a year. I have a 15 month old daughter from a previous relationship that left me as a single mom before I even had her. mark and I met while i was pregnant and because great friends. he asked me out when she was just 8 weeks old, and its been non stop fireworks ever since. We ahve talked many many times about out mutual desire to get married, and spend our lives together. He already considers himself my daughters father, as she knows no one else to fit this role. We arent really financially set to be MARRIED yet, per se. We are both 25, though he still has 3 semesters of schooling left (he left early, and then decided to go back once we got together). However, I really would love to have that symbol of commitment between the two of us. If he is as serious as he says, and as I believe he is, than i feel like engagement is the appopriate next step. Also, I have a ring picked out, and its a moissanite (much much less than a diamond, nearly as hard, more sparkle, no fear of being a conflict jewel) that is within his budget (0!!) How do I really let him know that im very serious about being engaged? I dont expect for a wedding until hes done with school, so ill time it out for 2 years.
Weve talked at legth about the engagement, and rings, the wedding, where it would be. I know we are on the same page there. He is waiting for school to be over to propose, where as Ive been burned and burned before and I say if we are really that committed why not declare it to the world, rather than wait?

If you two are going to be married, then the ability to be open is one of the most important factors. Ask him how he feels about it (an engagement) and tell him that you think it’s important. Perhaps once he understands it’s importance to you, he’ll go ahead and make it happen.
